We found out Oct. 27.
I started wondering when I was in Nashville, TN visiting the Dunn family Oct. 20-23, and I mentioned that to Evan when I got back. Saturday morning, October 27, I woke up earlier than Evan, which is not unusual, and decided to go ahead and take a test. Three minutes later, I saw the symbol I had never seen before. I was so excited I took it straight to wake up Evan. I held it a few inches from his face (because he's blind without his glasses), and said, "Can you see it?" It took him a little while to wake up and comprehend what was going on. *** I read up about this little sesame seed-sized baby that is now a part of our life.Weeks 3-4.
The couple of weeks after I found out, I felt kind of crummy. Food wasn't sounding good, and I felt nauseous in the evenings. Foods that were sounding good were cheesy--grilled cheese, macaroni & cheese, etc. Thankfully, sweets were no longer as appealing...for a few weeks. It kind of makes me wonder if I still would have felt crummy if I hadn't known I was pregnant at that point. But, I made it through a girls' weekend to Dallas, and a trip to Kansas with mom without anyone finding out.Majority of 1st trimester.
The pregnancy symptom that has affected me most is fatigue. I was so tired, I would take "pre-sleep naps" as Evan calls them. I would finish dinner, then sit on the couch to watch tv with Evan and gradually get more horizontal, until I was sleeping. I would usually fall asleep around 7:30pm, or during the first quarter of a Thunder game, and wake up around 10pm, around the end of the Thunder game. Then, I would be awake for about an hour, then head to bed for the night and sleep all night. This was a regular occurrence every weeknight, except for Wednesdays when we'd go to church, then I'd usually crash as soon as I got home those nights. This continued through about Week 14. I kept waiting for that surge of energy I heard and read about that supposedly comes 2nd trimester. I still don't feel energetic, but I'm definitely not as tired now at 16 weeks. I also had some serious lower back pain around weeks 9-14, but it has since eased. I've also had a couple of killer headaches, thankfully it's just been a few.Telling our family.
The stars aligned to bring Evan's parents, both of my parents, and my brother to our house for Thanksgiving lunch. When lunch was ready and the prayer said, we handed out cards to "thank them for coming to our house for Thanksgiving this year." They opened the cards, and our moms squealed while my brother sat staring at the card with a mixed look of confusion and disbelief before he finally asked, "Wait, I'm going to be an uncle?" Later that evening, we got to skype with Rachel, Evan's sister and tell her. However, we swore everyone to secrecy until around Christmas so we could tell some cousins, grandparents, and friends in person.Midwife.
I started doing research on midwives basically the day we found out, but I got overwhelmed quickly by how many there were to choose from. I printed out info about each of them and read it bit by bit over a few weeks. I hit about 10 weeks, and we still hadn't made a decision, so I started emailing a few midwives. The first one said she would be out of the country over the summer, so she recommended Susan. I emailed her and set up a time to meet with her. When we met Susan for our first ever midwife interview, she made us feel very comfortable and at ease. She answered every question we had fully, and asked us some questions in return. She even suggested a few more questions when we didn't know what else to ask. When we got home, Evan and I talked about how we really liked her, but we felt like we should interview a few more, just to feel like we made an informed decision. I emailed another group of midwives, but didn't hear back from them for 4 days. In the meantime, Susan emailed to check on me to see if I had any more questions and if we had made our decision. Her email checking in on us solidified it for me...she's the one. The only hesitation is she has another mom due in early July. We went for my first appointment Dec. 21st, where we went over paperwork, had blood drawn, urine test, and attempted to hear baby's heartbeat. I was so comfortable and relaxed with Susan that my blood pressure was on the low side of normal, which has been semi-high at every other doctor appointment. We're looking forward to the next 6 months getting to know her more. That brings us to now. My next appointment is Mon. Jan. 21st, and hopefully we'll get to hear the heartbeat for the first time!!
